Evergreen coniferous tree. It grows in the Andes mountain range, on soils developed on Quaternary andesitic and basaltic volcanic rocks, largely covered by volcanic ash and scoria, with good drainage. Its growth is characterized by being in extremely marginal and fragile ecological conditions. Its seed, the Piñon, has historically been used as a food source, putting pressure on the regeneration of the species.
Prefers volcanic soils and abundant rainfall.
